Also on 1st July 2007, the Ministry of Health introduced ten health targets aligned with its strategic priorities. The targets will form part of DHBs’ District Annual Plans and they also bind the Ministry which is charged with assisting in their achievement. The health targets give the health sector a focus for more concerted action. The ten health targets are: 1. Improving immunisation coverage; 2. Improving oral health; 3. Improving elective services; 4. Reducing cancer waiting times; 5. Reducing avoidable admissions; 6. Improving diabetes services; 7. Improving mental health services; 8. Improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and reducing obesity; 9. Reducing the harm caused by tobacco; 10. Reducing the percentage of the health budget spent on the Ministry of Health. The Ministry is providing leadership by appointing a ‘champion’ for each target. The champions will work with those responsible for those programmes within DHBs and the wider health sector. The champion for nutrition and physical activity is the Chief Advisor Pacific Health, Dr Debbie Ryan. For more information, visit http://www.moh.govt.nz/healthtargets
