New Training Programme For Pacific Nurses PDF  | Print |  Email
Thirty-two nurses from throughout the Pacific are completing a training programme designed to give them the literacy skills they need to become registered to practice in New Zealand.

At present, there is no transferable nursing registration between New Zealand and Pacific nations. Current registration rules require people from abroad to pass four English-related tests - International English Language Testing System(IELTS) exams - at Level 7 or above within the same year to demonstrate their English language proficiency. The new training programme has been established to help them pass those tests.

Elizabeth Powell and Anne Fitisemanu
The course has been developed by Elizabeth Powell and Anne Fitisemanu (pictured left and right) of Counties Manukau DHB and runs at the Manukau Institute of Technology.

Their course is also designed to capture a Pacific world view and provide a supportive learning environment where Pacific learners can flourish. Participants receive plenty of practical help – their course fees, books, travel and food are all provided.

Elizabeth Powell also sees plenty riding on the success of the new programme.

“If you are talking about reducing health inequalities in New Zealand, you have to have a workforce that reflects Pacific communities – you need people in your organisation who can speak Pacific languages. The language and culture of these Pacific nurses are a critical part of the skill base we need to develop.

Adds Anne: “These are experienced nurses, but they are coming here as caregivers and healthcare assistants because that’s what our system allows. There is a ‘glass ceiling’ for our Pacific nurses when they come here. The potential social and economic impact of these people succeeding for their families and their communities is also huge.”
